Restoration and Beautification of the Gold Plates and Fresco Artwork
Inside Sri Harimandir Sahib
Sri Amritsar Sahib, Punjab, India
Commenced March 2022 - Ongoing
In 2020, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC)
requested GNNSJ to undertake the Kar Sewa of conserving, restoring,
and beautifying the dilapidated gold plates and fresco artwork inside
the Sri Harimandir Sahib complex.
At GNNSJ’s invitation, Dr Bhupinder Singh, Professor in the
Structural Engineering Group of the Department of Civil Engineering
at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, conducted a
site visit on 23 October 2020 for a visual inspection of the complex.
Dr Singh was accompanied by Mr Kaizad, a leading consultant and
civil engineer from M/S Ushta Infinity, Baroda, Gujarat. Their teams
carried out various detailed scientific analyses, and comprehensive
reports have been provided. Restoration work on the gold plates and
frescoes within the sanctum sanctorum will be carried out under the
full guidance of this research. Additional consultancy has also been
provided by other leading heritage conservation and restoration
specialists.
The first gold plates were ceremoniously removed in a religious
ceremony on 15 March 2022. Master craftsmen from across India
have been engaged to undertake this historic project.
